What is the EAA?
The European Accessibility Act, shortly EAA, is a EU-wide framework that regulates the accessibility of websites, digital tools, and technologies for impaired users. The EAA comes into effect on June 28th.
But does this directive concern me?
If one of the following criteria applies to your website or app, the implementation of the EAA guidelines is mandatory:
Online shops (e.g. Zalando.at)
Booking platforms (e.g. ÖBB, Ö-Ticket)
Banks & insurances (e.g. George, ELBA etc.)
E-books, ticket machines, ATMs
Media libraries & streaming providers
Websites & apps offering commercial services
If the business initiation takes place directly on your website, this falls into a gray area, so it is not certain whether your company is affected by the EAA. Making an offer or listing prices most likely fall under business initiation.
Excluded from the regulation are micro-enterprises and therefore are not obliged to implement the EAA guidelines. So, if you have less than 10 employees and less than €2 million annual turnover, your company is considered a micro-enterprise.
What is regulated in the EAA?
In general, the EAA regulates that every user of your service is provided with an accessible user experience. The following points are taken into account for this:
Accessible websites and apps according to the WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines
The WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) provide guidelines for the design of web content so that the content is perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for people with different disabilities - in short: accessible.
Operable with keyboard & screen reader
People with visual or motor impairments rely on aids such as screen readers to access and use digital content. Therefore, it is important that your digital products are compatible with these tools and do not pose a barrier to these users.
Accessibility in design
Accessibility also plays a major role in the design of your website, app, etc. For example, attention should be paid to sufficient color contrast ratios, readable fonts, and sufficiently large font sizes.
Feedback option for accessibility issues
If your users encounter problems when using your digital products, they must be given a way to report these issues to you. This can

What does this mean for me?
But what do you need to do to comply with these regulations? We have summarized the path to your accessible website, app, or other digital tools in 3 steps:
01/ Check your offer
In the first step, you check if your digital offer is covered by the regulations. Not sure? We are happy to help, write to us or arrange a free initial appointment where we personally advise you on all things EAA.
02/ Conduct Accessibility Audit
Next, the Accessibility Analysis is on the agenda. In this step, we examine your website, app, etc. for the previously described features, i.e., how accessible they are. The accessibility issues are summarized in an Accessibility Report and form the basis for the next step.
03/ Create & implement a plan
The next step is planning the implementation. With the Accessibility Report as a basis, you can now start planning for the implementation of your accessibility adjustments.
With a completed plan, there is nothing standing in the way of implementing your accessible website, app, etc.

The EAA guidelines are important for everyone!
Implementing EAA measures offers some advantages and opportunities to your company. Even if complying with the guidelines is not mandatory for your company, we still recommend that you implement them.
Accessibility has a significant impact on your ranking on search engines (SEO) and helps you achieve a high placement on them, thereby increasing the visibility of your company.
With better accessibility, you reach a larger target audience and thereby expand your potential market and potential customers.
Not only permanently restricted individuals benefit from it, but also situationally restricted individuals. Users who have a cast or when there are currently poor lighting conditions, such as strong sunlight, benefit from better accessibility.
Accessibility strengthens the positive image of your brand.
