What happens in post-production?

This is of immense importance and includes the post-production of the filmed material, i.e. film editing, sound editing and finalization.

What happens in this phase?
Depending on the film, the necessary post-production steps can vary greatly.
The most important elements that no video production should be without are film editing and sound editing.

  • Step 1: Viewing the material and organizing the data
Before editing can even begin, it is essential that the film material is precisely organized - for example, sorted by scene or shooting day. This makes the subsequent work steps much easier, as the search for specific clips and sequences is shortened.

  • Step 2: Film editing
The next step is the film editing. In this process, also known as montage, the material is put together in such a way that the story is put together visually and emotionally.
Here you also decide between rough cut and fine cut.

  • Rough cut
This is where the scenes are roughly edited together.

  • Fine cut
After the rough cut, everything is neatly edited together. In between, the work is always approved by the producers so that the end product meets the expectations of all those involved.

  • Step 3: Digital post-production
This is where the image and sound material is optimized and finalized.
The sound must be of the same quality throughout the film. This is the reason why it is often post-synchronized. In fact, audio post-production can often be one of the most time-consuming parts of post-production.
The image is also visually enhanced with the help of visual effects (also known as VFX). In addition to retouching and color correction, certain effects are applied to the image material in computer programs. Depending on the film, these can be elaborate special effects that can be used to digitally depict entire fantasy worlds, for example.

Who is involved in post-production?

Several people are involved here - but the most important role is played by the Post producer. They are responsible for coordinating the editing and digital post-production (sound and visual effects), but also for the final approval and publication of the film.

The editor is responsible for the editing, i.e. the film cut.

Sound designers take care of the sound and post-synchronization.

For visual effects and special effects, the so-called VFX artists are responsible for visual effects and special effects.
