That certain something - print finishes

The most common print finishing processes

  • Varnishing

With varnishing, the varnish is blasted onto the paper using a high-performance UV lamp.

Varnishing can be applied to the entire surface, but even partial varnishing can achieve a very exciting, tactile effect.
A distinction is made in this process between matt and gloss varnishing, as well as full and partial varnishing.
Examples of this are

Relief lacquering (UV-curing, tactile 3D effect),

Textured varnish (exciting feel), etc.

  • Blind embossing / letterpress

In blind embossing, a haptic change in the paper is created by stamping and thus embossing. A distinction is made between deep and high embossing - i.e. whether the embossed element creates a depression or whether it protrudes.
The variant with letterpress is similar, with the difference that color is used for embossing.

  • Embossed foil printing

This process is technically very demanding. The substrate is deformed with an embossing die under the influence of heat. This means that the embossing die is pressed onto the paper under pressure. This process can also be used to create blind embossing or embossing in relief in a similar form (without foil).
Example of this:

Varieogram - embossed foil printing with a holographic effect - the reflection and colors change depending on the incidence of light. This creates color, movement and depth effects.

  • Sealing

Here, the printed products are sealed over their entire surface and without a foil-free edge on both sides. This is ideal for protection against soiling or moisture. This process is often used in the medical-technical sector, as it also meets hygiene standards.
Examples of this:

Foil lamination - also known as cellophane wrapping, is often used for menu cards or catalogs,
Lamination - can be wiped off, but is not as elegant as cellophane wrapping.
