The process

After a personal meeting with the customer, we received all the CAD files for the gearboxes and ball bearings from them. These files were converted by us and then reworked in the 3D program Blender. To begin with, the converted models were checked and any conversion errors were corrected or remodeled. In the next step, appropriate textures were selected and applied to the object. The objects were then staged and the ball bearings aligned with the motors/gears. Our aim was to make the representation of the objects in the final animation as realistic as possible. Once the post-processing was completed and approved by the client, we got to work on the animations. The main aim was to make the movement look as realistic as possible and comply with the laws of physics. For this purpose, the animation was created using mathematical equations to provide an object with a basic movement and automatically display all subsequent objects at the correct speed. The movements of the camera were also decisive factors in the animation.

In order to present these files to the customer, they first had to be converted into a video consisting of rendered individual images or frames. After any adjustments to the 3D animation, text overlays were created using Adobe After-Effects and inserted into the final video.

The advantages

In reality, it is not possible to see inside a rotating wind turbine or the gears of a moving train. All the processes in these machines would be much too fast and not visible to the human eye. in addition to providing a safe insight into this process, 3D visualizations also offer the possibility of displaying individual parts of gears in motion and regulating the speed in such a way that certain processes become clearly visible.
